Comic Sunday #1: Arrow and The Vampire Diaries from DC Comics

Comic Sundays are an American newspaper tradition where new comic strips are published weekly. At Becoming Books this tradition will continue focusing on comic strips, comics and graphic novels appealing to young adults.

Story by Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg; Illustrations by Mike Grell
24 pages, DC Comics
Received free copy via Viggle/Comixology Opinions are my own, review policy here.

Storytelling:
The story covers Oliver's return to Starling City and his conflict with following his father's wishes to right his wrongs. Set in the world of the CW TV series the storyline repeats the pilot almost line-by-line. There is no additional story telling that allows the reader to fill in any blanks or offers new information. Honestly, it is pretty much the opening credits... this is not surprising since the comic is written by the show's creators.

Artwork:
The artwork is from illustrator Mike Grell who worked on 'Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters' comic. If you're expecting the artwork to be in the likeness of the tv actors you will be disappointed. I did enjoy seeing the different stages of Oliver from arriving on the island, returning from the island and then being at home. The scenes, coloring and style are all what I would imagine for Starling City and reflective of the show while maintaining originality
.
Yay or Nay?
Nay, at this pace you can binge watch season one and get the same information.

Story by Colleen Doran ; Illustrations by Tony Shasteen
23 pages, DC Comics
Received free copy via Viggle/Comixology Opinions are my own, review policy here.

Storytelling:
This is part one of a three part story arc around a warlock seeking eternal life in exchange for riding Mystic Falls of vervain. The dialogue is witty with Damon carrying the load in his exchanges with Julian, the witch/warlock. I really enjoyed this, while it took place in the world of TVD and Mystic Falls it offered something new to fans of the show. The negative is that there is no introductions for the characters so if you have not read the novels or watched the TV show you might not even know they're vampires.

Artwork:
The cover artwork is in the likeness of the show's actors this does not carry through the book. The Salvator brothers also look older than they should which his kind of creepy since we know they don't age. Damon's character specifically experiences some inconsistency in appearance. On page 9 Damon looks boyish in his teens while on page 8 he appears much older. Jumping into the present day from 1865, Damon's appearance is reflective of the tv actor, Ian Somerhalder. Hopefully in future issues this gets ironed out.

Yay or Nay?
Yay! I will, at least, pick up chapters two and three to finish out the arc. I really enjoyed discovering a new storyline which is totally doable since the brothers have been around for a while.
