[Waiting...] The Doubt Factory by Paolo Bacigalupi

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine,
that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This Week's Pick:

Title: The Doubt Factory
Author: Paolo Bacigalupi
[Facebook | Twitter | Website]
Release Date: October 14, 2014
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Genre: Young Adult – Thriller, Mystery

Summary via Goodreads:

In this page-turning contemporary thriller, National Book Award Finalist and New York Times bestselling author Paolo Bacigalupi explores the timely issue of how public information is distorted for monetary gain, and how those who exploit it must be stopped.

Everything Alix knows about her life is a lie. At least that's what a mysterious young man who's stalking her keeps saying. But then she begins investigating the disturbing claims he makes against her father. Could her dad really be at the helm of a firm that distorts the truth and covers up wrongdoing by hugely profitable corporations that have allowed innocent victims to die? Is it possible that her father is the bad guy, and that the undeniably alluring criminal who calls himself Moses--and his radical band of teen activists--is right? Alix has to make a choice, and time is running out, but can she truly risk everything and blow the whistle on the man who loves her and raised her?

Why I'm Waiting...

Nothing like realizing your life of privilege has been granted by the lives of innocents! Action, betrayal and mystery boy... sign me up! I picked this up at BEA and fell in love with cover and thriller aspect. I've also heard nothing but praise for Paolo Bacigalupi's writing.

Thrillers and mysteries are starting to thrive in YA. What are your thoughts?

[Top Ten Tuesday] Books I Want To Read But Don't Own

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Top 10(ish) Books I Want To Read But Don't Own

If only I had ALL the DOLLAS!!! I definitely clip my B&N coupons and catch all the sales but physical books are so pricey so I don't own them all.... yet.

I realized most of these are series and I can only guess because I can't just own one of the books so I wait until I can buy the box set.... ca ching!

in no particular order

Harry Potter #1 – 7
I know... I know... It's a must invest. Trust me, I'm saving my pennies and keeping it on the wishlist.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy
I have to admit I have some major cover lust here and the reviews have it destined for my bookshelves!

Anna and the French Kiss Series
All the swoons. I've heard so much about this series!!!! I even wanted to do the read-a-longs but alas couldn't get all three books. There's something about having an incomplete set that irks me. I was also glad when I found out they did a cover change for the series.

Lux Series
I saw this series when it was in it's original covers and decided to wait since Jennifer Armentrout pumps out books by the boat load. Then they announced the repackaging after I bought Obsidian (book 1) so now I'm waiting for the series to wrap up so I can buy them all at once.

Talk to me:

Okay, so that's technically more than 10 individual books but I felt like using series was kind of cheating... haha!

What series have you been holding off on buying so you can get the whole set?

[Review] Madame Tussaud's Apprentice by Kathleen Benner Duble

Title: Madame Tussaud's Apprentice
Author: Kathleen Benner Duble [ Facebook | Website]
Publisher: Merit Press
Genre: Young Adult Fiction - Historical
Release Date: August 1, 2014
Source: Review copy provided by the publisher, opinions are honest and my own. – review policy here.

In 1789, with the starving French people on the brink of revolution, orphaned Celie Rosseau, an amazing artist and a very clever thief, runs wild with her protector, Algernon, trying to join the idealistic freedom fighters of Paris. But when she is caught stealing from none other than the king's brother and the lady from the waxworks, Celie must use her drawing talent to buy her own freedom or die for her crimes. Forced to work for Madame Tussaud inside the opulent walls that surround Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Celie is shocked to find that the very people she imagined to be monsters actually treat her with kindness. But the thunder of revolution still rolls outside the gates, and Celie is torn between the cause of the poor and the safety of the rich. When the moment of truth arrives, will she turn on Madame Tussaud or betray the boy she loves?

From the hidden garrets of the starving poor to the jeweled halls of Versailles, "Madame Tussaud's Apprentice" is a sweeping story of danger, intrigue, and young love, set against one of the most dramatic moments in history. via Goodreads

My love/hate affair with historical fiction...

I've always struggled with historical fiction so I have to admit when I got this in the mail I was just ehh... but the cover staring at me day in and day out eventually won me over. With the French Revolution in its infancy, Celie and Algernon seek rebellion with the commoners against the French monarchy. Similar to the tune of classical literature during the same time period Madame Tussaud's Apprentice struggles to take off in the first half of the novel.

But there's revenge to be had...

Celie and Algernon's bond comes from their mutual hate for the French monarchy as their loved ones have passed. Algernon's rage is fully apparent which keeps him from showing much affection towards Celie but as a reader I know what his end game is. Algernon is street smart and experiences a range of growth and development as the revolution heats up.

Celie comes off as immature for someone who's been living in the streets during the 1700s where living 16 years is impressive in and of itself much less as an orphan. There are moments where I can't help but wonder if she's really prepared to avenge the death of her family or would she rather a life of comfort with Madame Tussaud. With this lingering the stakes are kind of weak.

The history is the winner here...

When I thought the history would drive me away it's what kept me turning the pages. I felt transported into classical literature such as Les Mis and A Tale of Two Cities with the secondary cast behind Celie carrying the torch. Where Celie's narrative and antics failed to impress me it was Madame and her family that provided a sense of realism and will to survive.

Madame Tussaud and the royals steal the novel for me. During a tumultuous time in French history the revolution provides insight into the fall of one of the most powerful and rich monarchies. The family that is built around Celie becomes the foundation to hold her world together when life gets real and their way of life is endangered.

Kathleen Benner Duble's writing lends to realistic visions of the grounds at Versailles and the brewing war. There are a few times during Celie's time on the grounds that she witnesses real moments with the monarch lending a face of humanity to the enemy. Interspersed with French phrases I was whisked away into the ironic romance of the time period.

What I would have liked to see...

More pages! The novel weighs in at 224 pages and introduces us to an amazing solid cast of characters. I would have liked to seen this thickened up and possibly made into a series. In the author's notes Duble talks about how she had to speed up the timeline because the build up to and the actual revolution lasted a long time. But what if she didn't have to speed up the timeline?!?! Wishful thinking says this could've been epic.

The tag line for the novel is "An Untold Story of Love in the French Revolution" and I'm not entirely sold. Since my connection to Celie is a struggle, I feel like third person or multi-first person point of views could've been used to support Celie and Algernon's romantic relationship and to lend more depth to other character relationships. In the end their romance and Celie's bond to others was never flushed out fully so I could feel all the feels.

You'll like this if...

If you enjoy historical literature, quick reads and French culture!

3.5 Stars - Don't always judge a book by it's genre, n'est-ce pas?

[Waiting...] Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine,
that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This Week's Pick:

Title: Famous In Love
Author: Rebecca Serle
[Facebook | Twitter | Website]
Release Date: October 21, 2014
Publisher: Poppy, an imprint of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Genre: Young Adult – Contemporary, Romance

Summary via Goodreads:

The romantic story of a girl who gets plucked from obscurity to star in the next major feature film franchise based on a book and the ensuing love triangles she gets entangled in on—-and off screen.

Meet Paige Townsen, Rainer Devon, and Jordan Wilder…

When Paige Townsen, a young unknown, gets cast in the movie adaptation of a blockbuster book series, her life changes practically overnight. Within a month, Paige has traded the quiet streets of her hometown for a crowded movie set on the shores of Maui, and is spending quality time with her co-star Rainer Devon, one of People’s Sexiest Men Alive. But when troubled star Jordan Wilder lands the role of the other point in the movie’s famous love triangle, Paige’s crazy new life gets even crazier.

In this coming-of-age romance inspired by the kind of celeb hookups that get clever nicknames and a million page views, Paige must figure out who she is – and who she wants – while the whole world watches.

Why I'm Waiting...

I picked this up at BEA because I've always been intrigued by celeb culture and their behind-the-scenes lives. Plus, who doesn't dream of being placed in a movie with two hot co-stars?!?! I'm almost always rooting for the underdog so I can't wait to see this pan out! :)

My favorite (fictional) love triangles!

Joey, Dawson and Pacey from Dawson's Creek

Gale, Peeta and Katniss from The Hunger Games

Slater, Kelly and Zack from Saved by the Bell

Jake, Olivia and Fitz from Scandal

Share your love or hate for triangles in the comments!

[Review] A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall

Title: A Little Something Different
Author: Sandy Hall [ Facebook Twitter | Website]
Publisher: Swoon Reads, imprint of Feiwel and Friends/ Macmillan
Genre: Young Adult Fiction - Contemporary, Romance
Release Date: August 26, 2014
Source: Review copy provided by the publisher, opinions are honest and my own. – review policy here.

The creative writing teacher, the delivery guy, the local Starbucks baristas, his best friend, her roommate, and the squirrel in the park all have one thing in common—they believe that Gabe and Lea should get together. Lea and Gabe are in the same creative writing class. They get the same pop culture references, order the same Chinese food, and hang out in the same places. Unfortunately, Lea is reserved, Gabe has issues, and despite their initial mutual crush, it looks like they are never going to work things out. But somehow even when nothing is going on, something is happening between them, and everyone can see it. Their creative writing teacher pushes them together. The baristas at Starbucks watch their relationship like a TV show. Their bus driver tells his wife about them. The waitress at the diner automatically seats them together. Even the squirrel who lives on the college green believes in their relationship.

Surely Gabe and Lea will figure out that they are meant to be together.... via Goodreads

Told from 14 different points of view Hall whips up a quirky tale of boy meets girl through their first year of college. Intertwining viewpoints patch together the story of Lea and Gabe as they encounter a slew of awkward situations, just misses and try to navigate towards their own way of being together.

With a squirrel, a bench, best friends, and observers the humor and relationship shines through without ever giving the reader the couple's viewpoint, but their second hand dialogue, which can come off as clunky at some points. In the end, the slate of narrators showcase Gabe's growth and struggle, creating a well rounded character but leaves Lea falling flat.

Hall's risk with the storytelling pays off to create a light, fun read that will have you giggling and swooning as you root for the couple.

Fourteen viewpoints is a lot...

But I like it! However, I really would've liked to have had the MC's viewpoints thrown in there. This is especially true for Gabe since there is more depth to his character and he is a man of few words. I would've also liked more expansion on Lea's home life which comes up but is never discussed in depth.

Why I'll be buying a finished copy...

It's different, light, refreshing and real. Hall does a great job giving Gabe's pain and adversity attention without making it all that he is and integrating it into part of who he is. There's also a healthy does of diversity without playing into stereotypes and making it a thing.

You'll like this if...
You enjoy movies similar to Love Actually, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve. The changing viewpoints are very similar however there's only one couple everyone is rooting for and I find that special.

Or if you're going to college. Every freshman should be reading this... the truth is, it's hard to make friends, meet new people, and ask strangers out while you're navigating your own experiences and making independent decisions. And that's okay.

3.5 Stars

The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

Why I'm Waiting...

I'm guilty... guilty of never having read Jennifer L. Armentrout!!!! However, I do own all the books in this series so I can't wait to dig in. I'm very interested in Layla's powers and a new paranormal world. I've taken a step back from paranormal lately so it'll be nice to discover a new world and some deadly (hopefully, not though) kissy scenes.

[Top Ten Tuesday] Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Top 10 Books I'm Not Sure I Want to Read

Oh my... books I've heard about, bought, borrowed, etc. that I'm not sure I want to read. I'm notorious for buyers remorse and adding too many books to my queue. I decided to focus on the bestsellers list since I like to read the hyped books but these ten have been sitting for a while...

in no particular order

All the John Green
The only John Green I've read is The Fault in Our Stars and loved it but now I'm scared to read anymore John Green.

The Falconer by Elizabeth May
I bought this the day it came out. Haven't been motivated to read it yet...

Panic by Lauren Oliver
Bought this shortly after it was released and even won a copy down the road. Don't worry I gave away the extra copy... still sitting on my shelf though.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
So many mixed reviews have encouraged me to let this sit on the shelf. I still love the idea of the novel I'm just scared I won't actually love the novel.

Mortal Instrument Series by Cassandra Clare
Read the first book and it was okay. On the fence about whether I want to continue or not...

Maximum Ride by James Patterson
The paperback has been on my self for a while now...

Talk to me:

What should I be reading or passing on? Help!
