[Guest Review] The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Title: The Wrath and The Dawn
Author: Renee Ahdieh [Twitter | Website]
Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, a imprint of Penguin
Genre: Young Adult Fiction - Fairy Tale Retellings, Fantasy
Release Date: May 12, 2015

The Wrath and the Dawn was inspired by A Thousand and One Nights, but I wouldn't say it's a retelling. The motives, back story, and characters are different, although some are inspired by the original characters. Although I have heard of some of the stories, I haven't actually read A Thousand and One Nights but became so fascinated with it after reading this book that I actually watched the 2000 TV mini series Arabian Nights, which is essentially a retelling of the original tale... so yes, I loved this book!

For some reason, I didn't pay much attention to the prologue but turned back to the beginning after I had finished it, re-read the prologue, and was like whoa. I guess that's a good thing though, since it became all the more mysterious and suspenseful as the book went on. I found myself wanting answers as much as Shazi did. Renee is an excellent storyteller; there was rarely a dull moment and I found myself flipping through the pages much faster than I thought I would.

I also like how the book is written in third person; most of the YA novels I've read are in first person and sometimes it's frustrating to see only from the main character's point of view. I loved seeing things from Khalid's perspective and it gave the characters much more depth and we see their multiple dimensions so much more easily. Additionally, Renee does an excellent job with all of the characters' story arcs and intertwining them together later on (such as Shazi's dad, Tariq, and the main plot with Shazi and Khalid). In fact, reading this has made me realize that I like the third person perspective so much more than first person.

In terms of characters, Khalid is my favorite and his character development throughout is pretty great. I went from hating him, to pitying him, and then finally to just adoring him. I found most of the characters to be pretty interesting and I love how there are so many important supporting characters!

Overall, The Wrath and the Dawn is a beautiful story and Renee is one talented (and cruel - that ending!) writer; it's going right up to my list of "Favorites". :)
And that ending will make you want the second book, The Rose and the Dagger, ASAP. Trust me.

[Top Ten Tuesday] Wild Card... Series I Want To Tackle in 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

Top 10 Series I Want to Tackle in 2015

After this year's author events, book exchanges, Secret Santas, the county library sale, and several Book Outlet orders I have WAYYYYYY too many books in a series that I have not even read book one of!!! It's out of control and I see all of these beautiful lovelies on my shelf waiting to be read.

Below are the series I'd like to tackle this year...

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
I picked up this entire set for $14 at the county library book sale.
Yes, it's true, I've never read Harry Potter. I'm not really sure how this happened but it did and I intend on remedying it immediately!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
I was gifted book #1 and bought book #3, with Heir of Fire being signed.  I've heard so much awesomeness about this series that I'm ready to fight my feels and love Celaena!! Now I just need book two, well and to start reading...

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
I originally bought Isla and the Happily Ever After for YALLFest but I ended up missing Stephanie's signing. BUT that following Monday she was in a bookstore near me. I deemed it fate and bought the first two books. Now I just need to read them!

Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater
Okay so technically Sinner is not part of this series, it's a companion novel. So following that logic I read it earlier this year and pre-ordered it signed with a special dust jacket. I LOVED it so when I saw the whole series in hardback for $6 at the county book sale I nabbed them up. Now I just need to get on board and READ them...

Dante Walker Trilogy by Victoria Scott
Early in 2014 I read Victoria's new series starter Fire and Flood and really liked it. So when I saw books two and three of this series on Book Outlet I had to have them. Being short of book one make this series' reading a slow start... need to remedy that ASAP!

Mara Dyer Series by Michelle Hodkin
I own this whole series piece by piece. I got book one during a sale on Amazon for my Kindle, got book two at the library sale and book three I purchased in hopes of getting it signed. I missed Michelle but I do have the whole set which I've heard nothing but raves.

Burn for Burn Series by Jenny Han and Siobhon Vivian
I saw Jenny Han at a signing for All The Boys I've Loved Before and just thought was was pretty awesome. So when I saw these two I picked them up. Now I just need to get book three... and read one and two. Oh my...

The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd
I actually saw Megan at an author event this year and didn't own any at that time... womp, womp! However, I did get book two on Black Friday and then book two at the library sale. A Cold Legacy is out this month on the 27th.

The Syrena Legacy by Anna Banks
Oooo... sea creatures! I'm intrigued and yet own books two and three but not one. How does this keep happening?!?! *hangs head* Off to find book one and get to reading!

The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Word of mouth bought this series to my door. I currently have books one and two so I'm more than ready to start this series. :)

What series do you own but have not read?

[Review] Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Title: Lola and the Boy Next Door
Series: Anna and the French Kiss #2
Authors: Stephanie Perkins [Twitter | Website]
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile, an imprint of Penguin Books
Genre: Young Adult Fiction - Contemporary, Romance
Release Date: September 29, 2011
Source: Audiobook borrowed via library, opinions are honest and my own. – review policy here.

Lola Nolan is a budding costume designer, and for her, the more outrageous, sparkly, and fun the outfit, the better. And everything is pretty perfect in her life (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood. When Cricket, a gifted inventor, steps out from his twin sister's shadow and back into Lola's life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door. - via Goodreads

Hello Lola,
I wasn't crazy about you girl but I can appreciate your identity struggle and very awesome family unit. I would like one of your dad's pies.

Lola is a spritely high schooler with a much older rocker boyfriend. She has two dads and an estranged birth mother. She love fashion and dressing up everyday. She often makes her own creations. She's very San Francisco. She's quirky and her friendship with the Bell twins is something for the books.

The Bells did not invent the telephone.
Cricket Bell is the star here. He's an amateur inventor with an artistic eye. He's riddled with guilt that his family fame is based on a lie. He's a devote brother to his Olympic-bound twin sister. He'd rather be a great friend than not be in the picture at all. He's perfect, not in the sense that he doesn't make mistakes, but rather than he is selfless and giving without expectation. He's a bit mopey but hey he's got to have a flaw somewhere and it's not cuddling.

My heart aches for a story with him and his sister as the focus. Calliope is a bit more rigid for the both of them. Partly because she's a competitor but also because Cricket is so endearing.

There are issues and they're not where you'd think.
What I enjoyed most about Lola and the Boy Next Door is yes, there's a love story here but it's not always about Lola and Max/Cricket. There's sibling love, parent love, love that is ending, love that is beginning and love that is solidified at birth. It's all of these other dynamics that make the central story what it is. It also leads into the writer's strength...

Perkins = real love
I don't mean this as in some love is less real than others but more than love really is messy, complicated. In real life the timing is not always on point. Sometimes we are the other person and other times we just don't know what we want. I applaud Perkins for continuing to challenge fair tale beginnings and demonstrate teenage competency in relationship development. It's not always clean cut but there's swoons all the same.

I really enjoyed seeing Anna and St. Clair again. Can't wait to continue on with Isla and Josh's story!!

3.5 Stars – The central love story was predictable but it's all the other love that I can appreciate.

Releases February 24, 2015
Available for pre-order now!

Synopsis:

In Fire & Flood, Tella Holloway faced a dangerous trek through the jungle and across the desert, all to remain a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed for a chance at obtaining the Cure for her brother. She can't quit--she has to win the race, save Cody, and then fight to make sure the race stops before it can claim any more lives. In the next legs of the race, across the ocean and over mountains, Tella will face frostbite, sharks, avalanche, and twisted new rules in the race.

But what if the danger is deeper than that? How do you know who to trust when everyone's keeping secrets? What do you do when the person you'd relied on most suddenly isn't there for support? How do you weigh one life against another?

The race is coming to an end, and Tella is running out of time, resources, and strength. At the start of the race there were one hundred twenty-two Contenders. As Tella and her remaining friends start the final part of the race, just forty-one are left--and only one can win.

WOW!!!! These new covers :) Sooooo intense and fierce, much like the book!!
I can't wait to read Salt & Stone. We're in luck, Victoria is giving away an advanced copy plus some other goodies.

[Blog Tour] Embers by Karen Ann Hopkins

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them. And she may be the only hope mankind has as the rapture approaches and evil rises.

Embers is an epic paranormal adventure about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she’s in a horrific car crash that kills her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she finds out that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels. While Ember learns about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two young men who live in a frightening walled compound in the forest. Inexplicitly drawn to one of the men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it is cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war—one that’s been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound’s inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil—and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn’t only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She also might be one of the few champions who will make a stand for all of mankind as the rapture approaches and the end of days begin.

Embers is a dark and gritty YA novel that’s the first book in the series, The Wings of War.

About Karen Ann Hopkins

A native of New York State, Karen Ann Hopkins now lives with her family on a farm in northern Kentucky, where her neighbors in all directions are members of a strict Amish community. Her unique perspective became the inspiration for the story of star-crossed lovers Rose and Noah. When she’s not homeschooling her kids, giving riding lessons or tending to a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, she is dreaming up her next romantic novel.

Angels are among us...

This is my first angel-based series and I loved it! I have purposely avoided reading angel series but...

The cover is really what drew me in because I would never think of angel wings and fire combined. But, it's the end of times and this angel story is wicked cool. Karen Ann Hopkins is able to present a compelling paranormal and contemporary world where good and evil collide. I'm not talking sides, but more of internal struggles on what is right/wrong which is interesting since angels are known for their pure roles. I can't wait to see how Ember, Sawyer and the Watcher factions grow as the series continues!

Little mushy love stuff...

Thank goodness! It was so refreshing to have an awesomely strong female lead, Ember, without being propped up with an overwhelming romance. Sawyer personality is not overly desirable so the fact that they have a connection at all is shocking but you know bad boys are attractive. Hopkins gives us enough of a ship to keep it interesting but not overwhelm the reason for the story, Ember. Ember, her family history and her transformation are what is central versus sacrificing the core for all the swoons. I do foresee more relationship building as the series continues and the end nears.

That ending though...
Say what?!?!? This girl is on fire!!!! I don't want to spoil anything but the ending has me ready for book two like... yesterday!
