What makes a great book for me is interesting (preferably ones that I can relate to) characters. That's the most important part for me. (and of course an original plot, good writing and dialogues and all the rest).
Once you start a "great" book you can't stop thinking about it.....you can't wait to finish it but once you finish it... you are sad and wish the book had been longer. :)
A great book is one that features compelling characters that I can relate to who interact with one another realistically, as well as a storyline that is so interesting I keep wanting to read one more chapter.
I think what makes a great book are their compelling story. The plot of the story has to catch the readers attention. Of course, the characters need to be amazing and wicked awesome! Thank you for this amazing chance! :)
Amazing characters and a great story where I can get lost in their world and get out of mine for a while. One that keeps me awake late at night because I just have to finish one more chapter. Thank you.
A great book to me grabs you from the start and makes you get so invested in the characters and plot that when you finally reach the end you have to read it all over again. The book leaves a lasting mark on you and you never forget the characters nor their journey because you grew with them and they felt like a part of you. At least to me that's how it is. :)
I think it's probably a combination between good characters, a good storyline and good writing. If two of these are missing in a book that I'm reading, it's enough to make me quit reading it.
My biggest criteria is that I have to care about the characters enough to care about what happens to them. Whether I agree with an ending or not (cough cough Allegiant cough), if I'm invested in the story enough to have an opinion, then the author did something right. Books with characters that just make you go meh are not good enough for me.
I know this is a popular choice, but I need to connect with the main characters enough that I care what happens to them, to be sad if something bad happens and happy when something good happens to them and if it's a series its even more important. A good storyline and writing style is important too. I also really like books that have some sort of happy ending it doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't really like dark or depressing books.
Characters! That is certainly not the only thing that is important, but it is also one of the things that can make or break a book. A great book with great plot and great world-building, can be ruined if the characters are horrible.
The characters! They can either make or break the book for me! It doesn't matter how good the storyline is if the characters or basic, boring and/or hard to connect with.
Well-developed, flawed characters; consistency in world building and plot; tension that drives the plot; character growth (internally); descriptive (but not flowery) writing that helps paint the setting well.
A great book is a book that sucks you in, that makes you feel like you ARE the character, that makes you FEEL. It's well-written and captivating, it's likable and funny.
Characters are most important to me, but it has to have a good story too. I think it's more important for a book to be entertaining than perfect. Thanks!
For me, what makes a great book is being able to identify with the characters... and crying. If the book makes me cry it will most likely get a higher rating lol.
Memorable characters, an intriguing storyline, a fabulous voice and that something special that makes the story stick with you long after you're finished reading. Thanks for the giveaway! Ann S
Great question! I would venture to say this answer is different for everyone. For me, it's character development, world building, some kind of love story and a great plot.
A great book is when the author catches the reader's attention and the reader can't wait until the next book comes out. Also, when you have a great storyline, climax, and when the ending will keep you hanging on. Thanks for the giveaway!! :)
A great book has great characters you can relate to and empathize with also has new and mysterious situations not found in a typical life. If they are typical situations then if an author makes them memorable, that makes a good book for me.
First and foremost, keeping the reader's attention. If it can't keep a reader's attention, most readers will either DNF it or be disappointed it after they finish it.
The author's ability to engage the reader in the story is what makes a great book. This can be accomplished many different ways: character development, plot pacing, world building, beautiful prose, ect. It is really the author's voice as a writer, that special something that makes them unique, which can make a book truly great.
A great book is made of good writing, a good story, and interesting twists and turns throughout.

I think characters that I can connect with and a different aspect of the story.
ReplyDeleteAn enjoyable plot, characters that I feel something about, a good setting, and careful writing, all of these would make for a wonderful read.
ReplyDeleteBesides a good story and characters, the writing. I've read many books that could have been fantastic, but the writing was off.
